When Did U.S. Coins Stop Containing Silver?
1964 was the last year that U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollars were made from 90% silver for everyday circulation. This change was prompted by a growing global silver shortage, and the U.S. responded with the Coinage Act of 1965, which altered coin composition permanently.
Here’s what you need to know about U.S. silver coinage:
- Dimes & Quarters: 90% silver through 1964. From 1965 forward, they are clad copper-nickel with no silver content.
- Half Dollars: 90% silver through 1964. From 1965 to 1970, these were made with 40% silver. After 1970, silver was removed entirely.
- Silver Dollars: 90% silver until 1935. From 1971 onward, dollar coins were made from cupronickel or brass. Some special collector issues (red and blue Ikes) contained 40% silver but were not made for general circulation.
- “Golden” Dollars (Post-2000): Despite the appearance, these are brass and contain no gold or silver.
What About Silver Nickels?
Most nickels have always been made from a copper-nickel alloy. However, during World War II (1942–1945), the U.S. Mint produced “war nickels” that contained 35% silver due to a shortage of nickel.
Does the U.S. Mint Still Make Silver Coins?
Yes — but they are not made for circulation. The U.S. Mint continues to produce modern silver bullion coins, proof sets, and commemorative silver coins in .999 fine silver.
